This chick hatched while I was at work today and when I got home it had a small blob coming out of the umbilical cord area (about the size of a pencil eraser) - I recently checked on it and it was sitting in a puddle of orangish liquid (blood?) and the blob has gotten significantly larger. Any ideas? Is it the guts? Does it have a chance?

It is the yolk that was not fully absorbed before hatching. It has ruptured and the contents spilled out. If the hatching was interfered with then the chick was pulled out of the shell almost a day too soon. If it hatched completely without "help" then it was probably due to too high of temperature during incubation/hatching. What will happen is hard to say. If the remnants can dry out and don't become infected then it might do okay.

Today is day 21 and it did come out on its own. It was out when I got home from work so I am not sure how long it had been out. The others actually hatched last night so I took them out before going to work so this one was not bothered by any others during the hatch.

Make sure the poor lil guy is isolated, so the others don't pick him to death. Some make it some don't... hope this one does!

Keep it warm. Keep it isolated. Try to encourage it to drink. Give it 3 drops of poly-vi-sol baby vitamins without iron per day to help give it a boost. If the yolk sac membrane starts to dry out it is a good sign. Don't touch them. Don't pull on them. If it continues to be weepy and yucky and oozes or bleeds you might want to consider having mercy and culling the baby instead of letting it suffer until it passes on its own.
