I've actually had the good fortune to see two male indigo buntings alive & they are so vividly colored as to look fake. They also move in an extremely fast and haphazard manner, so perhaps he was not even seen by whom ever hit him. Both of my encounters with them occurred at the edge of woods though.

We have Indigo Buntings here too. Easy way to tell. Robin sized would indicate a Grosbeak - Sparrow sized would indicate a Bunting.
