what is this. Mites or odd feet?

My neighbor's brahma has an odd anomaly on her feet. Could anyone help identify it. All help is appreciated. The pictures will be listed below.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Yes, that is leg scale mites. They are tiny tiny mites that burrow under the scales of the birds legs. You will need to treat this as it can spread to your entire flock and eventually causes permanent damage to the bone.

Ivermectin paste works well. A pea sized dolop on a piece of bread for each bird that has this issue. Repeat in 10 days. Rub on some vaseline to the scales. Be gentle with them as you don't want them to break off. Let them heal and fall off on their own. Several times a week rub in some vaseline and this will help remove the crusts, suffocate the mites and help to soften and relax the scales so they lay down again.

Clean your coop from top to bottom, nest boxes as well. Use a good poultry bug spray and spray everything down, especially the roost bar and underneath the bar where all kinds of mites like to hide and lay eggs if they are not up under the scales or on the birds. Get in all cracks of the wood. Then replace your bedding. Once a week do a thorough cleaning.

This amount of leg scale damage can take a few months to heal.

Most big feed stores carry Ivermectin Horse Paste. If your feed store doesn't have it, Walmart even carries it in their horse section.

You can also go on line and order Ivermectin paste.

As for sprays, many feed stores also carry Permethrin sprays to spray down the coop. There is also some natural stuff you can use from Manna Pro called Poultry Protector. It is just oils and such that will suffocate the mites. You can get this at most feed stores and even Walmart carries this as well.

That is scaley leg mite damage. The dark matural between the scales is the mites' feses. A heavy application of Vasoline rubbed into the scales well and repeated weekly for a month should take care of it.
