what is this noise they are making?

My chickens have always been very quiet, and suddenly tonight they began squawking very loudly. I checked on them and they seem just fine. They are 4~5 months old and haven't layed yet. Any ideas? Thank you!

Mine have been CRAZY today! I've never heard them so loud! Scared the neighbors would complain! It's not a full moon...wonder if it's something else like that?

I'm wondering if they are gearing up to start laying?

Mine got much more vocal the week before they started to lay. Not just the normal "bok, bok, bok" either. A lot of squawking and screaming, some to the point where hubby and I raced down to the coop to make sure everyone was ok.

Are your girls showing other signs of laying? Do they squat? Do they have red faces, and plump combs and wattles? Do they investigate the nest boxes, and jump in/out/in/out of the boxes and coop all day?

If you don't have some nest boxes set up, now might be the time to get started organising that!
