I have never heard of that.. why not just poke a hole in the crust?

I *think* it was due to the old wood burning ovens being uneven in temperature. . the funnel, or bird let's heat or steam escape from the bottom of the pie.
They are mostly just collectables now. I learned about them from @room onthebroom
