What is this?

I use Seven dust, I pour a small amount in the foot of a knee high nylon, lightly tie a knot, then gently powder puff them where needed. Make sure to wear long pants, long sleeves, gloves & a dust mask. What worked for me this Spring was to go out in the a.m. before I let the chickens out in the run. Take 1 chicken out of the coop at a time, treat it then put it in the run when dusted.

How do you get it under the wings and around the vent with your powder puff? Just curious, as I've always heard you need to get it down into the downy feathers as well as under the wings. I think the key to idea of bagging the whole bird(except the head) was that they will flap around in the bag and get it all over themselves, better than we ever could by sprinkling it on them from above. I keep checking my chickens, but haven't found any yet, so I haven't had a chance to try this, and my Peacocks are just too big.

I agree with Dylansmom I have read that folks put the seven dust in a large bag and stick the entire bird in the bag leaving just the head out and work the dust around the bird , the best thing to do is make their dust area and add the poultry dust to it, birds love dust bathing it smothers the mites and the poultry dust is just an added measure

I grab out a bird from the coop I carry it outside where I have the stocking with the dust in. Using a milk crate I hold the birds neck with one hand and with the other I get the dust under the wing. Changing hands to do other side. Then I pick the bird back up, flip her upside down and powder her bum & belly. :)

Okay, I'm totally picturing this, it's great.

However I noticed yesterday evening that the male pea who sleeps on the floor now stretches just about from one side of the bird house to the other with his spiffy new train. All three of the males are looking quite dapper and elegant, with the longest trains they have ever had. Nobody's gonna fit in a milk crate, pillow case, or even a dog crate... and I have what I think is the largest wire dog crate made

(And their trains still aren't as long as Zaz's birds yet... but the oldest are only coming 4.)

I think I'm gonna have to go with the salting the dust bath with Sevin version...

Do you have any ivermec pour on? if you do apply 1/2 cc at the base of the neck and 1/2 cc at the base of the tail repeat in 10 days.
do they have a place to dust bath like fresh dirt? this is real important to birds like this, it is how they bath hence it is called dust bathing

You can make an area with fresh dirt and add some poultry dust to the area and this will also help keep the mites off of them. pot ash sand and peat moss is a great additive or as a bath also if you have some around

PS i found the photo i posted by typing in feather mites so yes that is what they are

Ivermectin will only work on blood sucking mites.

Is that the ivermectin pour on, or the ivermectin wormer, taken internally? I've been trying to figure out this whole mite thing... Thinking whether we could just start a thread for mite treatments & what works and what doesn't and why and why not, yadda yadda.

And seriously trying to figure out how to mite treat these guys and with what....

I can tell you that the thought of trying to roll one of these big peas around on the ground to dust his butt feathers kept me going for a good 20 minutes
