Texting is great example of cultural lag.

The technology came along that changed a major human behavior and we have not adapted rules for how to deal with it. Younger people who grew up literally with the technology as it grew are good multi-taskers. But, they have lost key abilities in emotional awareness. Their ability to read facial expressions has actually been compromised. And in skills tests their multi-tasking skills demonstrate that while they can do ten things at the same time they do none of them well.

This means missing key components of human communication. Facial expression, body language and tone of voice are all lost on forums and in texting. Those comprise nearly half of human communication. They have many "friends" but few friends. They spend all day talking to people on social networks but have no real social network and talk to very few people.

It cannot be changed now. The question that remains to be answered is what will they do with it as an entire generation grows up - like Lindsey Lohan and Brittney Spears - in the public eye with little to no privacy and no ability to leave their mistakes behind.......

I totally agree with you. I do have a cell phone but only for emergency use. I learned the hard way when I was on the highway at night in the cold and had to cut off the rubber wheelwell with fold-up manicure scissors because it was rubbing and scraping on my tire as I drove and I did not want to ruin the tire (I had one ruined before when something was caught in the wheelwell and rubbed for awhile) Do you know how sore my fingers got!! And I had to do it twice before I got to where I was going. I got a phone the next week and haven't needed it since.

My DH works in construction and they have trouble with young truck drivers texting while driving. They have had accidents because of this stupidity!! You are not supposed to use a cell phone when driving in construction never mind trying to drive and text at the same time.

Glad that Illinois now has a law that you can not text while driving. Not sure if it works well but I see plenty of cell phone users yakking and not paying attention either. So I would go for the cell phone ban while driving. If you HAVE to make a call or text, do us a favor by pulling over to the side and out of harm's way of other drivers and pedestrians.

You know what's funny about texting? I'm 46, and I LOVE texting, BUT I really don't do it that much. If I'm around the family and friends, we do text in front of eachother, but most of us have those Blackberry phones.

I never thought I'd like my cell phone so much......but I love it! It's really just like having a computer in your pocket. And you never lose touch with people. My kids will always answer a text, and it's a neat, new age way to keep in constant contact with them when they're not home.

I never get upset with any of my family or friends for using one, but they seem to know if we're having a serious conversation or whatever, to leave the phone be until we're done. So they do have some manners......

Everything in moderations.........

OH, and one last thing, NO TEXTING WHILE DRIVING!

Oh, one more thing.....my cell phone has a camera and it's wonderful to have it right with you for that time when "you wish you had a camera......". I always do! LOVE IT! And, you can send that pic to a loved one......to share.........

I believe it is the same here. No texting or using you cell while driving, and yet it is amazing how many people still do it.
I sat in one lane traffic today because the guy holding the stop sign was too busy to turn it to SLOW because he was texting. Holding up serious traffic. Come on, that is just not cool.

Jeez! Them too!

Illinois is WORKING to ban cell phone talking but they are dragging their feet. I do nto know if it means you can only have a hands free cell phone or phone intercom in the car.
