What is wrong with my chicken?

she has never been one of my heaviest birds but I think she is fine weight wise.

I have used this product I bought from Amazon, Verm-X (picture attached)

She improved for a few days but today she is not well once more.

She has some blood in her back, not sure if from pecking. She wants to walk but sometimes looses it's balance and tries to compensate with her wings. It is reminding me of 2 years ago I had a chicken culled due to suspect of Marek disease.

She is now isolated and it is eating. Eyes are normal, she is sitting down for 3 hours now in her isolation cage.

I am very sad, she is showing same symptoms as my other chicken that was culled.

It could be Mareks. Stress can cause an infected bird to become symptomatic.

I would also consider worming or treating for mites/lice with a chemical instead of the Verm X.

I am now reading how to cull it in the most humane way possible.

I cannot chop her head off or break the neck so I might go with the car exhaust method. I know many say this is bad but once I was already feeling very sleepy and light headed due to inhalation of car gases for a short period of time, no pain whatsoever.

the other bird that was culled I payed for a veterinary to do it, with corona virus this is not an option now due to imposed restrictions over here.

Not sure if I can do it, culling by myself. She cannot stand up but she is pretty aware of her surroundings. Looks active in the eyes, not so much in her legs.

She always comes to me when she sees me, today tried to stand up but went down immediately.

Called the veterinary to ask to stop by and administer the lethal injection, no answer. I am really torn inside because if the vet cannot come here due to corona virus imposed social distancing I do not know what to do.

Was able to talk with the veterinary, at the end of the day we will give her the lethal dose and she will be better by then.

I would call a couple vets if you don’t want to do it yourself. I’m sure someone will let you drop her off curb side and they can euthanize.

I wouldn’t try the exhaust method. A hatchet or tree snippers are the kindest and you’ll know she’s gone ASAP. You can wrap her in a towel to help keep her still. Some people put a sock over their head so they can’t see.


I always do a home necropsy on mine if I don’t know what was making them sick. Unfortunately sending them away for a proper one costs several hundred dollars here.
I’m not sure where you’re located, but it may be worth looking into.

The exhaust method is no good I know. But I just cannot decapitate or break the neck. I cannot do that either. Today I woke up immediately thought of that and felt really bad.

A while ago, I realised that owning poultry, death will always be present from time to time so I figured I should prepare myself for it. So, at a hardware store I had an axe to do it quickly but once I came to me and what I would have to do I just put the axe back on the shelf.

I prefer to pay a veterinary. I do not deal with animal death very nicely and I am not sure why. I just cannot stand to see an animal hurt.

So, today all is going to be good for the sweet chicken. She was a bully for a long time, pecking a lot on other chickens but I also really liked her.
