what is wrong with this stupid rooster

pick him up and carry him, do it when he comes at you, be prepared to not back down. Bend down and grab him. Mine especially doesnt like his girls to see me holding him. Dont let him down till hes calm and hold him for at least 15 minutes. I followed Reds suggestions and it does work but from time to time he will try again and you have to nip it in the bud. He will see you as the alpha. You must be allowed to hold the hens and be near them. He's doing his job and protecting his harem but he must respect you. Everyone he does this to must do it if they are around him often. I think its awesome to see him protect his girls just not when its against me.

yea he olny does this when i am around. my girls which are 2 and 4 have named him roo roo they call him and he comes running but when i come out there he thinks..... well i don't know what he thinks ! no matter how this trun out he is stuck here and he anit leaving !

Well we have been going threw this for over 3 months now. I did everything that Rooster Red said to do, and he just got really really bad, he flogged my daughter so hard one day, and IF I could have kicked him he would have been on the other side our 5 Acres.

This is the MEAN Rooser Whitey....

I gave him several more chances (why) I raised him and loved him, but I was not going to let him hurt my daughter one more time, he started going after me next so that was that, I put an add in our local paper and made a trade with a Lady Rooster for Rooster now we have a very nice RIR and he is so NICE..... sometimes I think you just have keep trying until you find the right one.

This is normal behavior. Your chickens think you are a rooster, all of them, even the hens. Roosters make this decision sooner or later and go through a challenge stage. I punted one for three years before he stopped. When they get older they do stop. I do not allow them to flog me.

Now I make sure none breed any hens in front of me. I pull them off, scold them verbally and disallow such behavior. I also hobble them periodically or tether them for awhile. When I hobble them they can walk and perch and get food/water but they cannot run and grab hens etc. Nor can they attack me. I am finding this is turning out to be a good thing. Plus it keeps the peace between all of the male birds when hobbled.

If hens approach me a squat I talk nice to them and give them a pat or two and they think I am great because I did not rip their heads off. It is ok to let them like you. They will think you are a rooster no matter what, might as well play a long. Weird I know but it keeps the peace.

I make hobbles and tethers out of leather from work gloves. It doesn't hurt them, just slowes 'em down a lot. Cockerels can be very aggressive towards hens when they begin to want to breed.

I love my boys as much as my girls and have a lot of them. A little management goes a long way to keeping the peace.
