What is your chicks' favorite treat?

I might be rushing it a bit. They are only a little over a week old and maybe don't appreciate the finer things to eat!! Maybe as they grow they will gain a more sophisticated pallet.

They're sort of like toddlers that way. My chicks seriously wouldn't try anything other than their feed and bugs and then it was like some switch flipped and now if "the hand" offers, they're trying it. I gave them some leftover noodles last night and they went bezerk. A lettuce leaf produced the same level of excitement. I guess they're on board! Still, they'll take a bug first if offered both and as I'm typing, little Maggie (the youngest in the group) is beating the bejeepers out of a large, round-bellied beetle even though I just freshened their feed jars and that usually causes a feeding frenzy. I'm not complaining, though. The more bugs they eat, the better!

crickets and u definately have to give grit if giving anything not soft (eggs, yogurt). It takes my 29 peeps about 1 minute to down 50 crickets!!

So don't expect it to last long!

Oh yes! You should be giving grit for oats, too! It's just easier to give the grit and not have to worry than to try to think of foods they can eat without grit.

My babies didn't like yogurt at first. Either try putting some of their food crumbles over it or put the yogurt on ur finger and see if they will eat (bite!

) it off ur finger. Thats what I did and they LOVE it now!

Our didn't like yogurt when I first tried giving it them either--they just walked in it and made a big mess. Then I tried greek yogurt (it's much thicker) and spread it on a brick, leaned the brick on the side of the brooder, and let them pick it off. That worked...they love yogurt now!

Chick update!

Lettuce good, spinach bad? Go figure.

Greek yogurt with bits of left over granola whoa there let me get my hand out of the way!

Cooked Greek style rice, it's glam baby!

Pita bread crumbled up to bite size, they're digging it, but the rice went first.

Bits of leftover ham. Oh yeah protein we can't get enough of this. Too bad the salt is too high to give them more than a few bits. That night keep away was their favorite game. Lets see how long I can keep my mouth stuffed with a couple bits of ham so the other girls can't grab it. Answer: About two minutes, then she went to eat it and another grabbed 'em and run around the coop some more. I guess that is Chicken Aerobics!

Scratch has become ho-hum they like it still but not crazy for it.

Cheddar Cheese they like it, but not crazy for it.

Lessons learned.

Feeding them bits of ham or cheese through the cage gets them to peck at your finger. Right now it's no big deal but later I worry they might get strong enough to put a good pinch on 'em. So now they only get food from the palm, and I am thinking about only putting it in a dish. I want them to stay friendly and not look at my digits as a meal.

Anyone have opinions about the girls pecking at your fingers?

Three of my four two-week old Australorps love earthworms. They fight and squawk over them, but the other two can take them or leave them. In a week or so I'll try some greens and/or rolled oats. I've heard chicks love raisins and craisins, but I think I'll wait a while before introducing those to their diet.
