What is your definition of "needs" and "wants"

That's kind of subjective. I work 16 miles from where I live. In my case, transportation is a need if I have to work.

The only true needs are food, water and shelter from the elements that would kill us, but for most of us that involves working to pay for those things. Now, if you can stand to live naked in a cave next to a stream and eat nuts and berries and maybe a snared bird or rabbit - then your life would be very simple!

2x like us living in the city, sure we don't have to drive but the buses have limited areas where they do their routes. So, yes, it is a need for those who have to travel alot farther and out of bus routes. It is not like living in Chicago which you pretty much don't have to have a vehicle to get around.

If you live in the mountains, in a rural area, far from anything, yeah you could walk but feels more like a need to me. Never make it to your job on a daily basis in the winter. Plus, part of DH's job is to deliver home medical equipment to patients, def. needed to deliver an oxygen concentrator.

I'm sorry but not wanting to change your lifestyle does not change wants in to needs. Living an working where you have to commute is a want not a need so a car is not a need ether. There are other jobs an other places to live.

I still stand firmly in my belief that transportation is a want.

Yes!

See here exactly is what I often think. Take for example coal and wood - Not a need. PLENTY people have lived without both. I mean, sure, they have wood from small brushes or bamboo or something, but not what we're used to. There's a lot of things a culture can be practically bred to condition to, yet we can actually live without them.

I'll admit, I'm way over the age of being able to drive yet I don't have a driver's license, am not registered to vote, I practically don't exist on the Gov't map - And I'm not dying because it it.

Thus, not a need.

Sometimes moving is not the best choice at this point. I've seen families struggling even more without transportation because they had to walk two miles to get to the nearest bus stop and going to jobs, so much time has been wasted being on the bus as well.

I agree with Little Chicken Lady, nowadays with services spreading more and further apart, transportation is a necessity. Thanks to the economy, buildings being closed down so what do folks do, travel further.

Well for city folks, coal and gas and wood IS a need to keep warm or cook your raw foods more effectively, particuarly up here. Down south, you pretty much can do it with bare minimum.

We can see vast difference between the Great Depression and now. What our grandfathers would want, is basically a need now. Particuarly transportation. Unless you can be self sufficent and not taking anything from outside, whew, that would be rough but doable.

I don't think transportation is a necessity, i think it's a want. You don't need a vehicle. People are just too dependent upon them to get around. Even if you work miles away, you could walk if you had to. You'd just need to give yourself a looong time to get there.

Well..i NEED an air conditioner in the summer time..so thats a MUST.
