What is your favorite breed of dog? & why?

Yes!! Ours used to guard our chickens as well, anything she posted as a threat she'd let you know. Our cats loved her as well, she was an outside dog so she was always with them. Anytime you looked out the window she'd be laying in the grass, one snuggled up to her or rubbing up against her. One of our cats Riceball was her favorite though, I'd take my dog for walks and she'd come with our dog was also deaf, and our cat has poor eyesight, so we figure that was also a reason they were so close, they just balanced each other out! But all in all, were definitely considering getting a Pyr puppy in the spring lol

Awww that's awesome! Gator has a little bit of a jealous streak and doesn't like the cat near his food plus he used to chase her as a puppy cause it was just fun (though we've since, mostly, trained him out of that) so him and the cat aren't real close

But he's gotten better. Now they get within arms length of each other to both be patted and when Gator was still sleeping on my dad's bed (now he prefers his bed, hard to jump up), the cat would jump right up in the mornings. So now they've finally sort of come to a mutual understanding and respect of each other and mostly ignore each other. This is after many years. Gator is turning 6 in March and Luna is turning 8 in August. They'll never be the cuddly type though. Maybe if we got a new kitten ?

I think Luna is also upset because she was the only animal for 2 years and then all of a sudden we introduce this big obnoxious puppy!

She's a tiny cat too and doesn't use her claws or stand up for herself.

He's not mean spirited though, he jist wanted to play but didn't understand he's wayyyy bigger and cats don't find that fun LOL and also admittedly the food thing started when he wouldn't come in or would be picky not eat food so we'd say the cat's gonna get it! Mean but effective. But in hindsite, a bad idea lol but he also knows now it's not true so doesnt care as much and doesnt usually chase. Not worth getting up too lol

Anyway, aww their relationship is adorable!!!

And you definitely should!! The full Pyrs are beautiful!

Also was yours a thinker? Has to think before doing anything? And depending on what's being asked or offered etc., has to consider what is in it for them? Because that is Gator. I used to think he was stubborn, and he kind of is, but it also just took the right motivation (a good enough treat or toy) and allowing him time to think. He's also lazy and now has bad hips so not asking too much. After realizing all of this at a couple years old, training went MUCH bettee and we understand each other

Now I've kind of slacked off on training and he could use some refreshers and maybe some new things

But he's pretty advanced with obedience and even learned some tricks.

I think the lab helped with the motivation and training side.

He's also the smartest dog I've ever had. Just incredibly smart. It amazes me. But all those smarts can also be tricky.

Hes not white either. He's all black with a big white patch on his chest.

I swear animals are like having children hahaha. Yes, she definitely misses her, she follows me around the yard, and stays in the backyard most of the time where my dog usually would be, unlike our other cats who stay out front. I walk by myself at times still and she's there right by my side, and the entire time she surveys the area as if she's looking for something, which she never did with my dog around. She definitely was attached to her. She's also been scared to raise her kittens by herself, because her guardian's gone. It actually truly makes me sad, but maybe if we get another they'll hopefully form a bond as well. Also, I know what you mean about the food thing!! Big Girl would never snap or growl at us, always the other animals, but never would she try to hurt them. I wonder if it's a Pyrenees thing lol

She was kinda like that!! She could be the most hard headed thing on 4 legs sometimes, unless food or her leash was involved (she knew it meant a walk haha) but other than that she was incredibly smart and watchful over everyone. She had bad hips as well :/

And yeah, Gator used to growl at us but then we trained a lot and now he rarely does. The only time he would growl though was over marrow bones or food/clothes he stole. But we also didn't socialize him or really raise him properly so I'm sure that contributed to it.

Now he mostly drops stuff when I tell him or if he doesn't, I just trade with food cause it's not really worth a fight. And we stopped giving him bones.

The only recent growling incident was when he found a dead squirrel on a walk that he DID NOT want to give up lol

So he does have the occasional growling instance but he's a good boy. And its rare now.

But yeah, definitely does it more with the other animals!

It might very well be a Pyrenees thing and then just magnified with us because we didn't do some things right.

For instance, he used to growl about being told to get off the bed but now he gets off immediately.

He's calmed down a lot though and become really well behaved.

That's exactly him! Something has to be in it for him or you have to be able to enforce it i.e. have a leash or something ha and he has to think about it. Sometimes the thinking can be frustrating cause it can take a while but it's just how he is. But he's funny because if he doesn't want to do something, he won't. Even if there's food. Like for instance, sometimes he just walks away during training. He's like yup, I'm done now. Now, usually i can get him back to do a couple more simple things so that it ends on my terms and some of this might just be training like letting him do it but I also know he's not going to learn once he's mentally done. I've tried forcing it and he becomes so distracted and disinterested. He's just like that. You could be using a GREAT treat but when he's done or thirsty or something it's like "see ya!" It's not just with training but that's just an example. But ooohhhh yeah, he definitely watches everything! He might seem sound asleep but he's always alert. Although I think he's slightly losing his touch but idk. Other times, he's still got it. But when he goes outside, he goes potty then posts himself in the ysrd facing the front so he can see but right near the chickens, between them and the front yard. And sometimes when he goes out in the middle of the night when there's a threat, he won't bark and will just lay right next to their pen for like an hour and refuse to come inside. Then he eventually will when it's clear. Now, that's not to say he doesn't bark, if something is actively getting in, he goes ballistic. But sometimes something is just in the woods. And he is SO SMART. My dad will tell him no barking and he wil lgo out and not make a peep and just plant himself. And he is always watching us too. Doesn't like yelling or fighting either. And yeah, unfortunately i think bad hips are just part of big breeds

I've had many breeds and mutts over the years, but my favorite is the Norwegian Elkhound.

Very intelligent, loyal to the family, playful, comical, cuddle buddy, great watch dog, great with kids, loves to swim, loves to walk in the woods, loves to go for rides in the truck, knows when you're sad or sick...awesome dog!
