What is your favorite breed of dog?

I hear ya! It's sad that a lot of people have to learn the hard way about breeding Merle x Merle...😞
Exactly!
Breeding for color in general just feels ick to me...the structure of the dog should always be more important. The amount of dogs that I see with rears higher than my self esteem and angles straighter than a ruler is really saddening.

My favorites have all been mixes except for a Belgian Malinois who owned my heart for almost 15 years. Great dog; intelligent, intuitive, extremely bonded to me. She was VERY high energy and needed constant exercise, constant training and constant tasks/challenges to complete until she was around 9 or ten.

What kinds of tasks/challenges did she enjoy?

I did a lot of obstacle training, tracking for a rabbit skin and hunting for objects. She knew about 15 specific objects; I'd tell her "get my Chucks" and she'd run off like a nut and eventually bring me one of my All Stars. "Get a boot" meant a workboot. "Bring your baby" was her stuffed toy, a squeaky cloth representation of a cheese wheel embroidered with "You're a Gouda Dog!" She also knew "where's Coop?" which meant find my son. He loved playing hide and seek with her.

She was also a fetch fiend. I built a tennis ball launcher out of a piece of PVC- think a potato gun firing scorched tennis balls- and we'd use it at a local park. I never marked the distance but it had to go 150-200 yards. I knew the game was over when she'd watch the ball go into orbit without sprinting to try to beat it to where it was going to land.

I would have to say it’s a tough decision between my silkie terrier and our bullies. Terriers seem to be my preference. My silkie was a lost little soul who became a fantastic constant companion once she knew I’d never abandon her like others had. Our current dogs are English bull terrier/Pitt bull mixes and extremely good dogs. Not because we had to work hard for it, but because they are loving and aim to please. We have been very blessed.

Favorite current breeds are Australian shepherds, and Boston terrier, and French bulldogs, and my little rat terrier Chihuahua mix.

Favorite past breeds that I've owned are coonhounds, black and tan, and bluetick, basset hounds, border collie, and rat terriers. I've also owned a poodle, German shepherd, Alaskan husky, and shepherd collie mixes.

Future favorites hopefully that we have yet to try are a lab, and a Shetland sheepdog. Subject to change. :)

Oh wow, that’s a lot of different breeds! Usually people pick one group (eg hound or herding) and stick with it- I’m impressed!

I've been at it for decades. :) So many breeds, so little time. I wish I could try them all.

We generally like the herding and working breeds, as well as hounds. Now that we are older we like dogs that are less challenging, and like to stick with us. I can no longer chase down a wayward coonhound. I'm reading that labs and sheltie like to stick to their owners, so we are considering them. I also need breeds that are good with other dogs because I like to keep a pack of all females. We currently have 7.

I'm a sporting/working person myself, I"ve never been much for herders or hounds. Labs certainly like to stick to their owners, and I'm sure you'll find them to be much more biddable than any hound breed.
