My best dogs have all been rescues!! Labs are my all time favorite (lucky for me we got a hold of a rescued chocolate lab!) but I'll take any dog that is a good friend and safe with kids.
Here is Charlie, a Black Lab/German Shephard mix. We adopted him from a family that was giving him up because the wife was pregnant and she didn't want him around.
The husband was very upset, the kids couldn't have cared less, but after we had him for a couple of days, they wanted him back. Sorry!
This is Dakota, a Chocolate Lab. A guy my husband worked with witnessed him out in the busy street, barely missing cars. He caught him (by the grace of God... that dog would run for days if he could) and kept him at his house for a couple of days. He took him to a big shelter on a Friday, knowing that being a lab, he'd be adopted over the weekend. He called the shelter Monday morning and he was still there... an hour away from being put down. He told them, DON'T PUT HIM DOWN! and ran down, spent $100 getting him out of the pound, and took him home. He casually mentioned to my husband that he had this dog, and I had always wanted a Chocolate lab, so "Jackson" came to our house. We changed his name to Dakota.
And Roxy, a corgi mix, was found pregnant roaming the streets of Beverly Hills (strange, I know) when the pound picked her up. A corgi rescue got her out of the pound, she had her babies, weaned them, they adopted the babies out, and had Roxy fixed. We had taken Charlie to Pet Smart to be groomed and Roxy was there in a tiny cage. We offered to take her outside for a walk while we waited for Charlie. We talked to the adoption agency about taking her but they wanted to come to our house to inspect, interview us, etc. So, Charlie came out of the groomers and the lady at the agency was so impressed with Charlie, how he looked and how well behaved he was, that she just let us adopt her without ever going to the house.
