that motto is quite a confusing one and i cant really think of something saying its not a stupid motto. maybe it is to mean that oregon is dependant on its own people and the state itself is independant?

I have often wondered how a state that was the final destination of so many independent thinking people, I.E. The Oregon Trail, could end up being such a socialist minded state, where it's illegal to pump your own gas.
