I have often wondered how a state that was the final destination of so many independent thinking people, I.E. The Oregon Trail, could end up being such a socialist minded state, where it's illegal to pump your own gas.

I don't know, maybe there is a heavy population of draft dodgers who were heading up to Canada from CA when their vw's broke down - so they just stayed here hiding out in the woods. Now they work at the Universities here.
