I originally posted this in pest and predators section but it may be better suited here and i have a few mores questions to add.

I just went to round up my chickens from free ranging and found 2 dead both in rigamortis. One was on the floor of the coop under the roosting bars and the other was on the floor of the run. Strangely enough there was also a dead bird outside of their run. I let them out to free ran about 90 minutes ago but honestly didn't pay attention much when i opened up the run because i had to hurry back inside. I'm not sure if they were both dead before i let them out or after. Typically how long does it take for rigamortis to set in? I am try to figure out when or how it happened. There was no signs of a psychical wound on either chicken (or the random dead bird in the yard). one hen was about 2 years old and the other about 7 months and in good health before today. any help or suggestions is appreciated. I am reviewing our security cameras to see if anything jumped in our yard that our 3 dogs didn't notice but the camera doesn't have a great view of the coop because its in the back corner of our yard.

***additional info: the hen in the run was just starting to be peck at by the other hens and rooster. How long does it take for them to start eating each other? :hmm

None of the birds had blood on them. The one in the run was a black sex link and about 2 years old her comb and waddles were pale. The one in the coop was an Easter egger about 7 months old but still has some red in her comb.

is there something i should be keeping an eye out for that can kill chickens and regular bird (i have no idea what kind it was)? Everyone else currently is alive and alert (15 hens & 1 rooster)

any ideas what killed them? i know there's not a whole lot to go on.

It could be a slew of medical problems. You can send the birds off to your local state lab for a necropsy if you want but it could have been a heart attack or fatty liver disease or another issue. What do you feed them?

They eat all flock feed with oyster shells on the side. They get scratch and balck oil sunflower seeds as teats occasionally.

Ya I still have them they are sitting in our burn barrel for the hubby to burn tomorrow. In AZ I wouldn't be able to schedule a pick up until Monday I'm sure they will be pretty ripe by then. Would it be to late for the hubby to cut them open tomorrow to see if we can see anything wrong internally? If not any suggestions on what to look for?

Put them in a fridge before transport. You won’t be able to test with an at home necropsy and some of the causes are microscopic. Here is a guide: https://www.agric.wa.gov.au/livestock-biosecurity/chicken-necropsy-guide
