Sorry I did mean Opossums and did not realize you were in Australia. Hopefully someone from there can help you out as your animals differ from the ones we have in the states.

No we don't. We have possums.

Our possums don't eat chickens...I would think fox is the most likely culprit.
There is soo many around in the moment, and they don't necessarily kill for fun like a dog would.
(not saying the don't, but many can be so wary they don't hang around long after a kill)

That is what I would think also as they carry their prey off never to be seen again usually.

It sounds like a fox. They do carry them off but will also leave headless chickens behind.
Fox got two of my sister's chickens the other week, carried the pullet off and left the headless rooster till the next night.
