It depends on desired uses. Buying a DSLR type with interchangeable lenses can be a very expensive hobby as the multitude of different lenses available are not cheap for the top quality lenses. It does however provide the maximum flexibility as there are specialized lenses for every purpose from macro photography to wide angle and extreme telephoto.

The Panasonic Lumix DC-fz series offers an excellent telephoto range (60x) along with a macro setting for an excellent price range. The current version is available for under $300 new. The latest version is the Panasonic Lumix DC-fz80.

The bridge camera offering the greatest telephoto capability is the Nikon Coolpix p1000 which has a 3000mm (125x) zoom lens that is also capable of macro photography. Of course it is nearly $1000.
