what kind of chicks does TSC sell?

they do alot of str run banties assortments here. And everyone else gets the dang silkies. Can you tell a silkie chick form a regular chick?

here they separate all chicks and put what breed they are on the bin they are in ( i just cant remember what types) well the bantams arent in separate things lol.... but all they usually have of bantams (here) are cochins americanas and silkies

Last year the TCS around here sold both silver and golden sebrights and Mille fleur D'uccles in the bantam bin.

Black and red sexlinks and cornish x in the largefowl/meat bird bin.

Tiff812: Silkies will have 5 toes and a topknot (fluffy bump) on top of their head... Also they look evil

Google a picture of a silkie chick and you will know what I mean.

Just thought I would add my 2 cents because I was an asst mgr at TSC and went through several chick days and then later started with TSC chicks.

The corporate office decides which hatchery each store gets chicks from as well, as how many. There was an invoice that came with but it generally only gave a few breeds like RIR or white Leghorn or assorted pullet, but the actual boxes were not labeled so its up to an employee to decide what is what, so often times the chicks could be mislabeled. Now from my personal experience buying the chicks is that they were not even the breeds that they were supposed to be. My RIR are production reds, although I think they Do that so people recognize the name. I got light Brahmas, a white rock, a BA, a welsummer, 2 black sex links, a silver duckwing, and one I never did figure out what it was. The white rock was labeled a white Leghorn, one of the bins said red sex link which none of them turned out to be and the BA was supposed to be a black sexlink.

The advice I would offer is if you do buy from there (we always had healthy happy standard chicks, but bantams had a very high death rate) is to not go in with your heart set on certain breeds, although we always had the production reds. Also, don't assume the breeds you think you're getting are what they actually are. But if you just want chicks and don't care what you get really, TSC is a great place to buy them!

I couldn't resist last year and got some from the assorted bantam bin. 2 Gold and 2 Silver Sebrights (One gold died shortly after getting it) 1 white silkie and a cute little gray one that the employee said was a silkie but I had counted toes and new it wasn't but liked it anyway he turned out to be a Porcelain d'uccle Roo he is so darn cute. I ended up 1 gold hen 1 silver hen with terrible markings and 1 silver roo who is a pain and 1 silkie hen.

Silkie chicks should actually be pretty easy to spot - they have black skin, feathered legs, and should have five toes on each foot, instead of four. Sometimes, the fifth toe is kind of "snaggly". They often have kind of a helmety looking head, too.

I actually found out today all chicks for TSC come from Privett Hatchery, I asked why they didn't order from Cackle here in MO and was told it was a desicion from corperate as Privett is able to handle the volume for ALL thier stores.

This is the first year that TSC is allowed to order from a number of hatcheries...our two local stores had their first shipments from Privett, but subsequent ones will be from Mt Healthy. We are in Louisiana, just fyi.
