Hi,
We could use some professional poultry advise.
We have 7-Buff Oringtons, 5-RIR, 3 Barred Rock,
2-Americana, & 1-Female Puggle; Poochie Mama !
Any suggestions "IF" we add a Cock to our 4-month old pet pullet flock?
We are looking for a Non-Violent Conservative,
handsome, gentle, protective cockerel,
Also able to get along with my wife, maybe that's asking a little too much? Do you think this breed exists????
Or, do we order and raise a new flock with a Roo or 2 of Black Australorp, Black,or Red Sex-Link, Black Star, or Welsummer?
Who could we order from this late in the year ??????
Thanks,
Big Jim

Where are you located? I have a Black Australorp Roo for sale. I actually have 2 for sale. The Black Australorp with the Barred Rock will give you sex-link birds. Not sure about the Buff Orps or the RIR.

I've never met a quiet rooster yet. Mine are all loud mouths. I've had a very sweet Easter egger roo, and Polish roo who wasn't mean but is quite shy and stand-offish, and a little bantam cochin roo who wants to chase my husband occasionally. I also had some australorp x Easter egger roos who were beautiful, huge and calm. We loved them. But my parents had a big Easter egger roo who was an attack chicken...

I'm thinking it all depends on the individual bird. But I've heard good things about barred rock roos.

None of my Australorp Roos have ever tried to attack me, now my Silkie Rooster, I battle him every day. He gets a good bath with my squirt bottle. It's either soak him, or get whipped by a 2 pound chicken.

Here is what you need to do. Buy 25 straight run chicks, breeds of choice. Keep the pullets. Knock off the roos and put them in the freezer as they become obnoxious, or at least, less than nice. With luck, you will be left with 3 or 4 nice guys, and you will actually have to choose one or two you want to keep.

I'm kidding, but I'm also really not.

Your best bet may be to find someone who has one of those great roos who can't have roos and does not want their favorite fellow to be eaten for dinner. What makes it a hassle is that sometimes the one who made a great pet at 12 or 16 weeks interprets this as being dominant over people at 24 weeks. There are some wonderful roos out there who need good homes. You can read all night about which breeds this is more likely to occur in, then wind up with a wonderful roo from one of the "mean" breeds who is the exception.

I bought 50 straight run last Feb. I had to choose between 5 or 6. I kept 3, and one of them wasn't the greatest choice.

If a 600 mile road trip one way sounds cool a black australorp sounds good. A dominique is usually a good gentle rooster. (may be hard to find). A RIR mixed with your pullets should produce good layers for the future. May wait for the pullets to mature a little longer before finding them a boyfriend cause he will be harrasing them before they are ready for him.(just my thinking) Wished I could be trout fishing the arkansas up that way.

I'd go with a buff orp roo. You could make purebred chicks if you want, and when you cross them with RIR you get gorgeous fluffy ginger chicks. My guys are still young- but if they are close to the normal breed temperment- they should be non-agressive.

Thanks for your comments, and direction.
Now, I'm on a mission, to find Mr.Perfect for my girls. Maybe start a new flock from McMurry?
I've been cruzin the Chix FS site here, and wonder, if someone has a Roo that seems interesting but they live in Tim-buck-too how do we hook up?
Do chic owners mail their FS Chix to me?
That seems the only logical solution.
Ohhhhhh yesssss, the Arkansas River cuts right thru the center of town @ Highway 50. If you ever travel this way Canon City, has a
RiverWalk that is absolutely worth a trip, definate
must see. It is a work in progress, we have more than 7-miles finished already, right along the water...No stores, or blemishes, only natural crushed stone to walk/or bike, bring your wadders,
& flies..
Some artist wants to cover it from shore to shore for about a mile with some kind of temporary membrane setup. But most hate the idea.I think his name is Cristo... Blah !!Blah!!! Blah!!!
