I got this one at Tractor Supply for $4. I use one side for grit & one side for oyster shell. Its screwed to the wall in the coop.

Chickens are intelligent. I'm sure that one of them could make a good job.
Sand isn't large enough to serve as grit in adult chickens. #3 adult grit is about 5/16" diameter. That is large enough to lodge in the gizzard of chickens over 7 weeks of age until the acidic environment and constant grinding breaks it down enough to pass. Sand passes right through.My soil is yellow sand so I don't need grit.
Pocket Gophers continually push up little mounds of fresh sand and the birds like to take it from there.
