Mine are a few feet away, like 2-3'.

Not sure it really matters, as long as they can find them and access them easily. Mine are all over the place, spaced out so no one can guard them all. I tend to always put them in the same places, so they know what is where, and only move things if there is a reason. During the dry months I have some outside as well, during the rainy season I move them all into the covered run.
