What kind of container should I use for baby chicks?

What kind of container should I use for my baby chicks? I've used a tub, but I am curious as to whether or not there is a more humane way to raise them. I've heard the sight of dismembered hands reaching into the tub can terrify the chicks.

I use a play pen. Or pack and play as some call it

I love these puppy play pens. This is my third group and it works perfect.

Those ideas seem pretty good. A storage bin sounds good. It probably will fit better in my area.

We made a top out of wood and hardware cloth that fits tightly on a metal horse trough.

I think it is normal for chicks to be afraid if you have to pick them up, I don't think you can get around that no matter what they are in.

I raised my first set of chickens in a Walmart storage bin until they were big enough to set outside

I keep them in the bath tub until i get the dog kennel set up with hardware cloth.
If you just get your hand down on the bedding before you move towards them.

I really am anti plastic bin of any sort - poor ventilation, too small.

To prevent reaching in from above, have your brooder door and "windows" on the side of the brooder, not the top.
