What kind of dog do you have?

The best dog I ever owned (Ginger) was a Border Collie, Springer Spaniel, Pit mix....... She was the best behaved, most loyal dog you could ask for

I love my APBT Halo, but I would get another dog like Ginger in a heartbeat if I ever ran across one

Herbie the Best Dog in the Whole Wide World is a mix of (we think) Ridgeback & Doberman but he might have some Vissula(?) Adopted him from a non-kill shelter about 11 years ago. 2 Great Danes, Thor and Molley. They eat alot, make as much mess as the horses and are too friendly to be good guard dogs. Oh one other thing; they think they are lap dogs!

I personally have a German Shepherd/Aussie Cattle Dog. I love her very much but she has a very high prey drive so she must be on a leash at all times:( I wish I could let her run sometimes but I have tried and as soon as she sees a cat she forgets to listen to me and chases the cat. She is getting better with the poultry but I won't ever let her around then without them being inside their protective fence.

We also have a Golden Retriever. He is fine with kitties but wants to kill the chickens if only he could get in their coop. He's 7 years old and we didn't get chickens until this spring. I think if he had been brought up with them he would be fine with them. He doesn't bother the ducks. I used to always walk him at the lake around ducks. He just never saw a chicken until he was 7.

Our other dog is a Bernese Mountain Dog. She is wonderful. She loves all critters. We've had 4 of these dogs. They are loving and very trust-worthy. My others used to help me raise kitties and bunnies and never tried to hurt them. The one we have now is 8, almost 9. Never saw a chicken in her life but now guards them very well. I let the little chicks run around her and they even hop on top of her. She just lays there and doesn't mind at all.

I think there are many good dogs out there. Any breed can be good for you. It just depends on how you raise them. A lot of my problems with my German Shepherd/Aussie Cattle Dog come from the fact that I broke my arm when she was 4 months old and couldn't really walk her on a leash any without pain so I just let her run loose in the backyard. Up until then she was the most excellent puppy and listened to every command. My breaking my arm and letting her run she decided she doesn't have to listen to momma anymore. She's a great dog as long as the cats are not around to chase so sometimes I lock the cats up for awhile and let her run around off leash.

Cash is an Anatolian x Border Collie cross. He's very smart but also stubborn/strong-willed.

Brodee is a Borzoi. Not a good breed to have around cats, small animals, poultry, etc...unless they are HIGHLY supervised & well-trained. Brodee has done VERY well & we've never had any incidents with him, but he also doesn't get the chance.

The worst thing he does is sneak into the coop & grab eggs.

And we had a chocolate lab puppy, Bailey who just went to her new home (my parents) this weekend....

I have two great danes...love them both to death. They are the greatest dogs. My female has turned out to be a great watch dog. Barks at strangers and strange animals but is all bark and loves people; the other one is too young to tell yet. They have been so easy to train/housebreak and they have the funniest personalities.
