I have just discovered that I have mites. Er, well, my chickens have them. I have just one hen with scaly skin all over her legs. The rest seem fine. I realize now she has been like that for a few weeks. (bad chicken momma, I thought it was just dry skin or something)
I am going to vasaline her legs in the am. I would like to dust the chickens, what do I dust with? I will do them all. I understand that the coop should be treated too, but is there any way to not do that? I can't keep them out of the coop for any more than a few hours while there is daylight. (7 to 5) so i dont know how I would treat it and allow them to go back in without doing any harm. hmm...
But most importantly, what is this dust that people use?

Sevin dust. Dust all around the coop, especially corners, nooks, and crannies where the mites hide during the day.

Do a topic search with sevin as a search term. You'll get lots of information.

It doesn't matter what the brand the dust is. As long as it 5% dust. 10% will kill them. A lot of people use sevin dust though.

Sevin dust is the best for dusting--you can buy it at your local hardware store or home depot, etc. It wouldn't have anything to do with wry neck---treat wry neck with polyvisol(no iron) drops--that can be bought at walmart or any grocery store in the infant/medicine section!

I use poultry dust, rather than sevin which is being pulled from the shelves- and i have read where you also need to dust down the roosts and wood, because they will burrow into it, and come out at night-

I used to use seven dust now I use adams flea and tick spray when I can find it if not I use what I can find its a whole lot easier and doesn't cost much more, I just spray it on them when there roosting about every other month or so, and I think it works a lot better

Sevin can be put right on the chicken? Or that is for dusting the coop? Do I have to worry about the eggs/girls if they injest it?
Flea and tick powder..... I would get this from a pet store? (I have easy access to a pet store right today)
WD40.... I have seen David, you mention that several times on BYC, I believe you that it works but I wonder if it stings? I wonder if it can absorb into the skin? I wonder if they would peck at it and they injest it?
Thanks folks!
