What kind of hen is this?

She looks alot like my golden spangled hamburg hens, and yes, mine are hatchery stock so they may not have perfect markings

yes she is moulting.
She came in the ornamental collection of birds. There use to be two of them but one got eaten by the coyote.
They are small and skittish.

But if you read in the APA standard of perfection, it says that the redcap hens are supposed to have a large rose comb that is square in the front. The color of the breast and body feathers is supposed to be brown with a black tip or black lacing. The shanks and toes are supposed to be slate blue while the beak is supposed to be horn. The comb face wattles and earlobes are supposed to be red, that hens earlobes are red with some white, but alot of red earlobed breeds have white in them. McMurrey doesnt sell golden spangled hamburgs, they sell golden pencilled and that hen is not a golden pencilled. That is why I say she is a redcap, redcaps are beleived to have golden spangled hamburgs in their breeding when the breed was created but the type of this bird doesnt really look like a hamburg.

Wow thanks Mike! I never noticed that MM didnt sell Golden Spangleds...that leaves only Red Cap as for a possibilty as to what your hen is.

I think she kinda looks like a sebright. Pretty whatever she is.

This is a Red Cap. I specifically purchased her, I had a pair of them, mine is probably not the best example of the breed, but a Red Cap, none the less. Your bird is a Red Cap, not a mix. Red Caps are "laced", not a solid color.

The rooster, he's hard to see because he was so wild I could never get near enough to take a good photo. You might be able to see the large rose comb that these birds were bred for.

This is a Silver Spangled Hamburg...replace the white with gold and you have a golden spangled hamburg, which Murray Mcmurray does not carry.
