Sorry to add to this post but can anyone identify this quail, it hatched among a load of coturnix but is the only one like it, just wondered if there was a name for it or if its just a colour/pattern variation

If we are talking button quail, I have read about someone having two pairs in an aviary, though as far as I remember the pairs in question were bonded before being put together. This might be part of the reason why it worked - everyone were happy with their own partners, no need to try to impress anyone by fighting. But if there isn't enough room, there might still be territorial fights. I don't remember the size of the aviary in question.
I also read about someone on here having a large aviary with many buttons of both sexes. I don't quite remember whether there were any problems involved in this though, but the person seemed to thing it worked well.
