What kind of snake is this?

sorry, didn't think about it, but the head is as skinny as the tail is. Already disposed of the remains..... but am thinking of fishing them back out to bait my raccoon traps. I'll see if it is still there in the AM. It's too dark to find it now

With the combo of color blind and it acting aggressive (and your grandbaby bring there), I'd have shot first asked later too. I had an uncle bit when he was preschool aged, he can in with bloody finger tips saying the worms bit him. If it had manners and was simply sunning then you have time to check it out, striking at me or mine gets anything killed.

I'm just glad the dog found it first and not the baby

my first thought was a corn snake - but if you have children either learn your snakes or (I apologize in advance to all you snake lovers) kill it.

Or maybe just walked away and left it alone????

It's an eastern milk snake, absolutely harmless

Yes but... at the time he did not know that, and it was striking at his animal, in the area his granddaughter was in a minute before. It's not a case of a snake napping in the sun harmless, this was an unknown snake that was striking.
