what kind of snake is this

Doesnt look much like a Corn. Im not even sure they are really native to Texas. I'd go with Ratsnake. Beautiful thing, pitty your wife was ignorant and chopped it to pieces.

Well it is most definitely not a copperhead. Copperheads have a distinct dark hour glass pattern.. meaning the dark bands narrow along the center of the back. Also, copperheads (and most pit vipers) have shorter, thicker bodies. This snake's body is more constrictor-like, so I think it is a lot more likely you have a rat snake.

Unless he's a known bad guy in your area (rattlesnake, copperhead, water mocassin, etc) why kill him? If you don't want mice and rats around getting into things, pooping in things, carrying fleas (plague), diseases (hanta virus), etc), good snakes should be encouraged. Around here gopher snakes (aka bull snakes) are great. I only kill bad snakes. Here that's just rattlesnakes. Bull snakes are easily mistaken for rattlesnakes. On page 1 of this thread Nifty-chicken posted a very good pic of a gopher snake. Notice that his eyes are ROUND. Here's a pic of a blacktail rattlesnake. Look at his eyes.

Such a brutal act and a huge mistake. Something I'd be ashamed to admit. It took many years for that snake to grow that large. And you killed it for no reason. There is no reason to kill any snake. What a disgrace.

In my book, only good snake is a dead snake.

We kill all the snakes that happen to get within site, the guys wife did a good thing. Even if your a snake fan, she didn't know what kind of snake it was, it would have been gone before anyone could figure it out, then you have to worry about what kind of snake it might have been. Would it be a danger to kids or dogs or whoever.

Any snake that can get it's mouth around an egg or a chick will take advantage of the easy meal.

Nope, see a snake kill it, don't form a committee on snakes...

Snakes need love too, especially when there are tons of ignorant people out there that choose to kill them instead of love them. His wife didnt do a good thing at all, she murdered a snake. She might have done something that seemed like a good idea at the time, but it all comes down to one thing, she murdered it. And there was no reason. If people wouldnt be so ignorant, they would educate themselves on the snakes in their area, and she would have known that it was harmless. I say time and time again, Animals dont have the power to be Evil, but Humans do.
