What kind of superstitions or maybe "words of wisdom did you grow up

Sweeping a baby on the back will make encourage him to start walking.

hmmm, maybe that's what I need to do with my 15 month old:rolleyes:

my grandmother had tons, but I don't know them all

she used to put an ax in the ground when a storm was comming to "cut the storm"

My Dad would NEVER go up or down our staircase in the house if someone was already on it!

-If you see a black car from funeral home, hide your thomb or you don't get to see your parents when they pass away.
-Wistling at night will call snake in your bed.
-Clipping toe nails at night will bring you bad fortune.
-Wasting a grain of rice is sinful, since there are 7 farming gods living in it.
-Peeing on the frog will give you sty.
-Eating too much chocolate will give you nose bleed.

This is all I can remember from what I used to hear in Japan. Some make sense and others...

Oh, last one was what my dad used to say to me and my brothers all the time but I think he just didn't want us eating chocolate! I actually believed it till recently

*red sky in the morning bad weather approaching red sky at night good weather

I heard a similar way to say that...my dad was in the navy so his was-
Red sky in the morning, sailor take warning, red sky at night, sailors delight.

I always loved that one.

I'm enjoying all of these superstitions...it really makes you wonder how they all got started. keep them coming!

My fav was always:

Play in the fire, pee in the bed.

Others:

Nose itches: someone is coming to visit.
Ear itches: someone is talking about you.
To see an owl in broad daylight (out of habitat): death in the family.
To wash clothes on New Year's Day: wash a family member away.
Cabbage on New Year's Day: you will have money throughout the year.
Black Eyed Peas on New Year's Day: you will have good health throughout the year.

I could probably go on and on, but I have other things to attend to at the moment. Let me think on this one a bit and I'll get back with y'all.

Does anybody remember 'step on a crack, break your mother's back'. I was terrified of stepping on cracks in the sidewalks!

The one about red sky in the morning....I tend to look at the sky every morning and watch if it's true. It seems to be close but not 100%.

I had a friend that was very superstitious. She said you shouldn't sew on a Sunday. And there was something about rocking an empty rocking chair???

I didn't grow up with many superstitions but had a grandmother who said things like:

if it's worth doing, it's worth doing well.
No matter where you are, somebody will see what you do (this one is definitely true)

Her words stick with me to this day

My Grandmother was ScotchIrish and my Granny on the other side was Cherokee, so I guess I grew up with my share of "superstitions." My bf makes fun of me now because I always refer to folk sayings and swear they are true.
Red sky at morning, sailor take warning; red sky at night, sailor's delight.
If you say thank you for a plant it will die.
Plants do better if you steal them.
Itchy palms means you are going to get money.
Itching nose means someone will visit.
Sweeping under a single girl's feet means she will never marry.
If you hear an owl hoot 3 nights in a row, someone is going to die.
Deaths always come in 3's.
It's good luck if a bird or a butterfly lands on you.
Dream something three times in a row and it will come true.
If you dig a hole during a full moon, there won't be enough dirt to fill it back up.
Love those and the idioms that my Grandmother used to say. My favorite was when she would see something tacky. She'd say, "I wouldn't have that on a Christmas tree!"

Bad luck if a black cat crosses your path
Bad luck to walk under ladder
Seven years bad luck if you break a mirror
Friday the 13th bad luck

Others already mentioned
All I can think of right now

Find a four leaf clover, Good Luck
