What kinds of life lessons have your chickens taught you?

Never mess with the hens in presence of the rooster. They are his hens, and he will attack if necessary.

Bring food to the coop, prepare to have it taken from you. No matter how hard you try to defend yourself.

Don't give any treats, don't expect any eggs in return.

Never try to cuddle or hold with the rooster in front of the hens. He will be embarrassed and put up a fuss over it. Take him far enough out of sight of his hens and he's a whole different rooster.

Never leave a chicken sitting on your head for an extended period of time. You will regret it.

No matter how convinced you are that your chicken is potty-trained...You never know when disaster will strike at the worst possible time.

The mixed look of fear and/or astonishment on people's face when you show them your huge, fierce-looking rooster, when they've never seen a chicken before in their life...priceless.

True, but it is possible to learn some life lessons from them. Maybe not all of your life lessons, but they can indeed contribute to them...probably not in huge ways, but it's still nonetheless a contribution.

Never open your mouth and expose your teeth to a chicken thats within 6 inches from your face, they will peck thinking its food and it will hurt

Even after I know this from experience...It still tends to happen. And I regret it later.

I've had that happen to me SOOO many times. It hurts, doesn't it? Watch out- they also peck eyes if they shimmer.

Don't leave a food dish in the run at night. The rats will use it as a party room (complete with food, of course) as well as a restroom

Do not read the BYC board while you're eating. An involuntary guffaw could cause what you're eating to be projected from your mouth onto the computer screen! Blech!!

Fabulous replies!

And I beg to differ with the poster who said you can't learn life lessons from a chicken. That has been one of the most amazing things about my family's journey into chicken keeping. We have learned so much like - sure you might bicker with your family during the day but when it's night and the temperature is low, you huddle close together taking care of and protecting each other because that's what a family does.

If you are quiet and pay attention, you might be amazed.

All the reply's to this question are so true. I do not even know what to add. Except I never knew you could love chickens so much. I have dogs cats, and 2 goats also. Chickens are so funny. No matter how bad a day you are having they make you smile. Like today I walked into the coop and there were 3 hens just rolling in the dirt taking their bath. I told them they were dirty and going to get a bath(LOL) they just looked at me and kept rolling.
