What kind of sweet treats do YOU make for Christmas?

Major insomnia last night, so I crawled out of bed at 4. Had maybe an hour of sleep.

Sugar cookie dough is now mixed & chilling, Ginger cookies are mixed & baking (tray 2 of 3 in the oven now)

Yeast bread is rising...and will be ready to form into loaves as soon as I go back in the kitchen and swap cookie trays.

Perhaps when the bread is done I will nap.

I have one more favorite kind of cookie that will get made. It is my ode to heart disease and the ONE recipe I still use hydrogenated shortening in. The only one. I make it only once or twice a year...

Gulp. This year I'm going to try it with unsalted butter. If it bombs, I will make a second batch, with that little 1 pound can of shortening I bought for a few months ago when I planned on making these (but never did...because it's hydrogenated heart death in a can...)

We had a horrible time with the sugar cookies last night. The dough wouldn't stick together.... it just cracked and fell apart

. We tried adding water to half, that didn't work. We tried adding flour to the other half, that didn't work. So we are going to look for a basic recipe... again.

How do you mess up sugar cookies?!

I was still wide awake and in a baking mood because of this thread last night, so I made Peanut Butter Chocolate brownies...yum yum yum!!!!!!!!!! I will definitely be making these again!!! SSSSSOOOOOOOO GOOOOOODDD!!!!

I did use carob chips because I had no chocolate chips though. And I used all shortening because I only had about 4 T of butter...lol

1 C Butter
1/4 tsp Salt
4 Eggs
1 1/4 C All purpose Flour
1 1/2 C Sugar
1 tsp Baking Powder
2 tsp Vanilla
1/4 C Cocoa Powder
1 C Chocolate Chips
1 C Peanuts

1. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease 13x9 pan
2. In medium bowl, stir flour, baking powder and salt.
3. In large bowl, with wire whisk, mix melted butter, sugar and vanilla.
Beat eggs in one at a time.
Stir in flour until well-blended
4. Seperate batter in half (1 1/2 C). In one bowl, mix in peanut butter and chocolate chips.
5. Add cocoa powder to other half and stir in peanuts. Pour both into layers in pan.
6. Bake 25-30 minutes.

I used all shortening and it turned out fine.
I used carob chips instead of choc. and it doesn't taste any different.
I also omitted the peanuts because I HATE crunching on peanuts. But love peanut butter, go figure.

WOW...you must not have little kids....LOL

I have one crib midget who is 2 and a Firefighter for a hubby, he will promptly and proudly tell you he is "4 years old" in a little kids voice at any point and place in time lol.

The hubby works 72 hrs at a time and the crib midget is very very helpful and does his own chores ~ feeds dogs, checkes eggs, puts his clothes away and in the laundry, make his bed ect, along with helping me cook. The hubby is one of the three main guys at the stations who cooks for everyone so its in his blood from both sides.

I get more cooking / baking done when its just me an the kiddo than I ever do with the hubby home! The kiddo helps measure, mix and just about any step besides cracking eggs. He has the recipe down by heart of what our bread recipe needs ~ we make it min 2 times a week, along with cookie tree recipe. IJust today we made 12 cookie in a jar, soup in a jar mixes and baked 12 breads in a jar all helped by him measuring things out and handing me lids while things are hot and what not.

I am super lucky to have such a good "big boy" little man helping me.

I believe you can make a basic pound cake with that. It's been years since I've made one.

Butter cookies, perhaps?

Custard / pudding?

I've never heard of pound cakes before! What might they be?
Butter cookies sounds nice. I usualyl suck at baking things though, it all falls apart into weird shapes!

I usually make sour cream/nutmeg cutout cookies and sticky toffee pudding. I would eat too much of both of those left to my own devices so I only make them when I know that I'll have Christmas visitors to prevent that by eating some of them. I don't make candy but have a niece who always gives us a box of assorted sweet treats every year. We really enjoy those!
