What kind of thermometer do you use?

From Walmart, a digital, I believe the brand is Springfield, shows temps and humidity.
My fiance also (bless his heart) gave me a couple cheapy thermometer/hygrometers he got online, but I have yet to try those.

LINK!! LINK!!! Please!! Somebody give me a LINK!!!

Cyn, is there any particular combination thermometer/hygrometer that you can recommend for a newbie to this whole hatching thing? I'd hate to buy the wrong one and put the eggs at risk over it.

Cynthia, they do have accuracy ratings stated on some of the household thermometers. Of course it's a range of 1.8-degrees F...

What I wonder about is....why 1.8 degrees? Seriously, if you get to comparing them and run up on the ratings they're *all* 1.8F.

Anyhow, I've still got visions of Spot Checks (or Egg-Temps) dancing in my mind...

Take care,

Well if it says there is an accuracy of 1.8, that is almost two degrees up or down, which is by regulation what they are supposed to be. And that is not near accurate enough for incubating. Seriously, I have had AcurRites, Springfields and Taylors and not one had an accuracy rating. That is far different than +/- .18 (point-one-eight) that the Spot Check has, which is 10x more accurate than any household thermometer, if I can still do math.

I've seen it before but in the recent weeks I haven't been able to find the Egg-Temp thermometer on the website. I just went through the long list (your second link) and still haven't found the Egg-Temp on GQF's website. Have they stopped handling it or am I just blind?

Ed

I just tried and can no longer find it on their site, either. Well, Cutler has a good price on it.

This one is on GQF and has a sticker that says so, but that is the Fluker's combo one that I have that no longer reads properly. It used to, but not always reads about a degree higher than it really is, plus it's now 10% too low on the hygro part. That is pretty typical, really of them after they've been closed up in a bator for weeks. What you need to do is maybe get a stiff piece of cardboard or plastic ( I cut it from the microwave meal trays) and velcro that skinny one to the back of the plastic. If you don't, it tends to fall between the eggs and if you flex the body, you will mess with the screen's reading, so just a word of warning. At first, the Flukers was great and quite sensitive. I did return the first one I bought because it jumped all over the place, but this one was great up until the last incubation.

Yup! That's the one I just bought Cyn. So, how much use did you get out of yours before it started going wonky on you? And is it age that does this to them, or could it be that a new battery is in order?

Here's hoping I didn't just spend nearly $20 on a piece of junk.

I have an Extech 445715

I actually have 2. The first one worked great in the bator for 2 months. I moved it to the brooder and the heat lamp clamp slipped and it ended up resting on the unit. It melted part of the screen and I thought it was a complete loss. After it cooled down and regulated itself....it still work perfectly! DH bought me another one, but I keep the 'injured' one as back up.
I also bought the $7 walmart one, but it still in the packaging.
