What kind of thing SCREAMS at night?

as close as you are to fort dix it would,nt surprise me if thats where the critters are coming from we have problems here at Langley AFB and fort eutis with coyotes that and there are a coupla wildlife maagement areas around you that and several airports I trap across the highway from one airport here and the buffer zone around it is loaded with b'cat and coyote I would still bet on a bobcat hunting muskrats there on the coast

So the screaming is some animal,
but I like the obscure comments on this post of who we think it is:

A demon
Yeti
La Llorona
Banshee
Jersey Devil

Some people with more money then brains buy exotic animals for pets. When the animals become more then they can handle they turn them loose.

True and so very sad. I've heard weird stuff in the woods. A few weeks ago, my older son and I were out after dark one night and a really crazy screaming sound started. I was freaked out, but he told me it was some specific type of owl that he had learned about in boy scouts and proceeded to tell me all about it. I love owls, but they make me scared for my chickies!

It could have been an owl. They can make HORRIBLE screeching, screaming sounds.
Especially if you live near woods, there are sure to be owls. JMHO

I'm guessing it's a Fisher. I'm no biologist, but I'm pretty sure there aren't any big cats in Jersey'. Although there are probably a few bobcats.

More likely to be the Jersey Devil than a cougar/mt lion. Folks, in that part of NJ there's just not enough range for a mountain lion. It is however a known haunt of the Jersey Devil.
