It is really cruel to put cayenne into bird feeders.
Squirrels will scratch and tear at the faces to the point of serious injury because of the pain.
Buy a squirrel proof feeder. They do exist.

This is the first I've heard of that. May I ask without being a smartypants, have you seen this happen yourself?
I've read the thread about cayenne at Birdforum.con where folks are also as humane as folks can get (just like BYC folks) ... and nothing was said about squirrels suffering. No one wants them to suffer, just stay away. I have to believe that you are talking about a very rare incident. Perhaps the cayenne was applied in outrageous amounts.
I have seen no warning against feeding peppers to chickens (i.e. it isn't forbidden on the treat list) so I would think that it is safe to give them. Even if you get no more egg production the birds will enjoy the treat, especially if they are RED in color (they love red stuff!). Or so I have heard.

I've been doing this for years and have had the same squirrels in our yard for years and have NEVER seen anything like this. It's not cruel. We have a one-eyed squirrel that's been living near our backyard for years, and he's at the point where the pepper doesn't even really bother him.
Was reading this link got up and started grinding some dried chiles we grew this summer since we have only been getting 3 eggs out of 7 chooks. Heated my piece of left over pizza and threw some on my pizza now I've started to worry about producing more eggs myself. And don't wipe you face after handling those things....... ouch! I know for a fact if it's a warming effect were looking for a small amount of these WILL do it!
ok, i've read this whole thread and noticed a question that popped up a couple times but never got a response (unless I missed it somehow)
-do the eggs taste different?-
I think i'd like to do this becuase when we have terrible wind and snow and rain mix, we keep the girls in all day and needless to say, only about 2 eggs a day.....
I just personally don't like anything spicy and if it alters the flavor/heat of the eggs I also don't want to do this.
