What made you decide to get chickens?

I just got tired of KNOWING where my eggs were coming from and not liking it. I couldn't justify buying store eggs when I have the room and the ability to raise my own. So I did. I knew I would like them and I would care for them....I had no idea I would go completely chicken crazy!!! I don't like them, I

them!!!!!!!

It was hubby's idea to get a couple chickens! Ha he had no idea the monster he created when I fell in love with them. We are also concerned with the turn the country is taken for all the reasons I have already seen listed on here. So fresh eggs and eventually meat from them is just a bonus to the joy they bring me. Not to mention they fertilize my garden and keep my meat rabbit company!!

dido for the same reasons as trollkiller. It also teaches my kids to live a sustainable life who will pass it to my grandkids one day hopefully

I don't want to contribute to animal cruelty. I always felt guilty buying my eggs from the store knowing where they came from. It's so sad how some people treat animals. I'm an animal lover and thought raising chickens would be a good idea. I really think it's a great experience. & it keeps getting better!

I just feel like buying more and more.
When I see ppl on here that have hundreds.. I'm like wow.. but I wouldn't be surprised if that's me someday lol.

The chicks were cute and the idea of being 'self sustaining' was too excellent to ignore. We started with 5, and now have nearly 30.

Well my younger 2 boys 11 and 13 already had guineas and ducks, so my oldest, 15, thought he'd like to get chickens. So for his 15th birthday, he got chickens! 13 to start him off. All different breeds. Now I'm obsessed!

My story is quite funny. Years and years ago, my family went to a party. At the time, my brother was about 4 years old. At the party, he was given a balloon with a rock weight on the end. it was almost in the shape of an egg. My cousins tried to play a trick on him & told him that it was an egg with a baby chicken inside & it needed to stay warm & under the light. Well, a few weeks later, there was still obviously no baby chick. Long story made short, he threw tantrums for days & my parents caved & bought 3 rhode island red hens & two silkies. Now, im 20 years old, have my own family & about 50 chickens..

We built out house on 42 wooded acres about 4 years ago. I've always known that it would be forever before we would be ready to have larger livestock animals, what with all of the other work to be done around here. So, I decided I wanted chickens. It's not like we'd have to build a barn, and fencing, etc. LOL If only I'd known. Still, it is a much smaller scale than if I'd wanted sheep, or horses again. It must be over a year now that I keep saying "I want chickens!" Out of the blue, my husband bought a chicken coop! That was about a month ago, and now I have 8 lil chickens! My 7 year old son is totally thrilled. He says they're his babies. Hmmm ... we'll see how long that lasts. My husband said now that the slave labor part is complete, his chicken job is done. However, my son told me that yesterday while I was at work Daddy changed the chicken's water! He'll get suckered in, yet!
