What Made You Get Your Chickens?

we wanted to be more self sufficient as well, I've had cows and didn't want to do that again, hate pigs, chicken can be nice and kinda pet like, so here we goooo

My daughter in law works with a guy that has a farm, one day he brought in blue/green, brown and white eggs to give away because he has so many, I had never head of blue eggs and though it was neat so I started talking to the wife about raising chickens, her neice works for the city and said I can have chickens but not roosters, One day I looked at the old tree house in the back yard on stilts and thought that the bottom looked like the plerfect place to raise chickens, after waiting for the guy to give us the chicks he promised for a couple weeks my wife was at the feed store getting Advantage for the dogs she found out they have chicks and bought me 5 RIR's, I have been working on the coop for a week now and still do not have it the way I want it, oh and by the way my son bought two easter egger chicks for me also and the guy is in the process of hatching the other chicks for me so I'll be swamped soon.

It all started here with three pullet chicks my mom bought at the local feed store about Easter time many years ago. LOL. So those three cute little chicks bought on my mother's whim were my introduction into this area. It did not become a passion until I started meeting people online, and learned about the ornamentals, Sumatra mainly.

Then I also learned about the endangered breeds and wanted some of those. LOL. I don't need too much of a reason. The only thing keeping me from having a zoo is space and money.

We always had animals growing up - Mom and Dad still do - and since I have been married I have wanted to but never had the place to do it. Now that we live on our own property (4 1/2 acres) in the country I am sooo past ready to get my chickens.

Actually I am not quiet sure how it happened. We live in the country and don't have any neighbors (as we bought all the land around us). We have raised cows for beef and we have done the pig thing. (Cows I will do again pigs NEVER). I guess I just thought chickens would be a great thing for the kids and I to do together. I am officially addicted to them. I raise 50 broilers each year and love my layers and Rooster dearly.

I've always wanted to have chickens for eggs and manure and just to have wandering around the yard. Finally this is the year! Hubby has been hard at work building the coop, he seems to be all onboard with it

Always liked them. Love to hear rooster crow, hen w/chicks. Eggs are a perk and the manure for garden is great. Really just like to see them wandering around in yard.

FYI on rabbits, they don't frighten that easily or at least the ones we had.

The chicks were soooo cute just peeping away in the bins at TSC, so I talked my DH into getting some for the kids for Easter. The cost of eggs lately is so astronomical that it wasn't hard to talk him into getting some chickens! Now I'm hooked!

my reason were for environmental. I live in a area that has a lot of ticks. My children were constantly getting lyme disease. So we purchased chickens to eat the ticks. We also use the fertilizer for the garden and then we supply the neighbors with eggs. I also sell the eggs that don't get used. Because of the good fertilizer, we know supply ourself and the neighbors with fresh veggies in the summer. The chickens have saved me hundreds of dollars every year with the tick problems between what the chemicals would cost and the doctor bills.

Well... what did it? hmmn... I like to blame the loooong hard winter we had. I ordered my chicks back in February when I was going nuts. They'll be here sometime between Sunday and Tuesday. I live on .25 acre in the middle of a village but there is no zoning. I garden and raise rabbits for meat and their manure. So, this seemed like the next logical step. Plus I am hooked on fresh eggs. I don't want the store bought ones anymore. They just aren't any good fried!

I am now really questioning the idea of getting some meat birds. I feed my dogs a raw diet so we go through a lot of chicken. I would like to be able to use less meat from factory farms.

And growing up, my mom always called me Ellie May.

*ps on the rabbit thing, domestic rabbits don't frighten that easy. I have large dogs and a cat.
