What made you happy today?

Hornet's been laying for about 3 weeks, and she's gotten really efficient at it. Only spent about 20 minutes in the nest box this morning. I feel so bad when they're first starting out and it feels like it takes them forever. So yeah, this made me pretty happy to see!

Yay, Hornet! :highfive:

This happened many days ago, but I forgot to share it.

My mom and I were FaceTiming and she took the phone out to the chicken pen so I could see the birdies. The two new polish are in a hardware cloth playpen within the bigger fence. My mom propped the phone up facing into the pen so I could see the babies while she went to get them fresh water. The babies wandered away to the back of the pen, so I tried to call them back- “heeere, chicky chickies! Heeere, birdy birds!” Like I’ve always done. One of the older hens heard my voice, came over, and started pecking the back of the phone. I knew it was Vanilla when she made her high-pitched, wavery call, “uruhiiiiiiiiii….” Automatically I replied one note lower, “uruhiiiiiiii…”
So she said, “urr, ur ur.”

And so we conversed by phone, 1,797 miles apart.

I will add- I have attempted to speak to my dog on the phone several times; it completely baffles his mind and he runs to get his stuffed squirrel to play with every time, no matter how simple my commands are. 😂

Perhaps the chicken brain is simpler, and better able to accept the conundrum of my disembodied voice. :idunno

I love this story! They absolutely recognize your voice. We have a ring camera in our chicken pen, and sometimes I'll tune in and chat while my husband's taking care of them. Poppy gets very upset and starts screaming for "mom". She knows I'm in the camera, but can't figure out how to get to me! 🥲

One evening after I got off work I was talking to dad to see what he wanted me to pick up when one of my cats Raven heard my voice and meowed at the phone (she's a talker, if you meow at her she meows back)
