I was pretty sure they were Roos. They have gotten a little redder and larger combs since that picture. I took it early last week. It's amazing how fast they grow! I think I have 4 Roos for sure out of the 8 big black chicks. Thank you for your input. I'll take all the help and advice I can get!
We ordered 12 bantam eggs + 6 standard from Dunlap hatchery. Our incubator was free (one of those cheap Styrofoam ones) and didn't hold the heat very consistent despite many different creative attempts on my part. We ended up with 3 standard chicks and only 1 bantam silver pencil rock made it. The two EE bantams that tried to hatch really struggled to get out of their thick shells. One died while still in the egg only partially out, the other worked from the first exterior pip for 48 hours to hatch, and finally made it but was so exhausted it only lived a couple of hours. I will never use an incubator again unless we have one of the really expensive well-made ones.
After it became clear our eggs were not going to work, we went to a Tractor Supply Co and picked out 8 assorted bantams to keep our one survivor company. The whole process was heartbreaking, but I have to say it is really fun trying to figure out what our 8 mystery bantams are.
I'm so sorry to hear about your experience with hatching eggs. I know I want to at some point in the future. I will defiantly keep your story in mind for that. I'm sure it broke your heart.
I went to Cackles site and I think the hen does too. Of course I think a lot of chicks look the same at this point. I'm hoping to be better in the future!
I saw a picture of the silver pencil. They are very pretty. I might get one in the future.
Do you know what the rest of your bantam assortment are?
