I have been following this thread for some time. (some might call it lurking

) Had the most amazing experience today. Found someone on Craigslist with rabbits for sale. I went to the woman's house which was actually a mini farm. She had the best rabbitry. She taught me so much about rabbits and we talked about raising for show, pets and/or harvesting. Initally I thought I was going for meat rabbits. After spending so much time sharing some of her knowledge with me, there was absolutely no pressure to buy any of her rabbits. She provided me with a harvested rabbit to see if that's what I want to do in the future. I ended up buying 2 of what I think are the cutest pet bunnies. It is great to meet such amazing people. I would have never guessed I would have gone to meet someone I talked to over the internet. It turned into an afternoon of a wealth of information. I am excited to post pix of my new little ones. The woman also had a litter of 10 day olds that were popping around their nest box like pop corn. It was awesome!! Can you tell I love this chapter in my life. Thanks for letting me share.

No pics posted. I can't wait to see them.

Here's my 5 week old love sponges. I only have the two for now. Sorry for the pix. I am not a great photographer and my buns haven't mastered the art of still photography yet. Some of your bunnies are absolutely beautiful. Mine are mutts and perfect for my first set. (They bring me right back to my childhood when my parents bought me a dutch.) They are supposed to be NZ mixes. Every time I think of them I get a big smile on my face. I am a 50 year old little girl when I am loving on these bunnies. How is it that animals bring such joy just by BEING. Thanks for letting me gush.

Those are the cutest love buttons. Congratulations, bunny mommy! I'm no expert, there are many on this thread, but they don't look like NZ mix. The fur looks a little wooly. NZ fur is straight and kind of silky. I have a NZ Mini Rex mix that is the sweetest love bug. You will have the best time with your bunnies.

PS if your bunnies are actually only 5 weeks old you might want to milk supplement for a couple of weeks. I got my mix at 4 weeks and supplemented Timothy hay and pellets with kitten milk and a little bottle from the pet store. You can even put a little bit of heavy cream in it. Also, be sure NOT to feed them anything else for a few months, maybe 5 months. No carrots, no apple, no celery, nothing. Here is my mix drinking milk supplement.

Beautiful bunnies everyone! I LOVE our babies. Our does are becoming sweethearts, the babies melt me.Having 8 babies fly outta the nest for scratches and love when I open the rabbitry door makes me smile even on the most stressfu day and the other 6 babies are starting to explore now too :) easiest livestock ever lol

For the scent worries with new borns...
I grow an herb garden for the animals, I'll pick a few leaves of oregano and cilantro and when I go in to check on a brand new kindling, I give mama a lil bit and the smells of the fresh herb is everywhere and the girls love a lil treat.

Here's some baby pics...doe 1 is on week 4 and doe 2 on week 3. They grow so fast.

Doe 1 gets no peace now. Babies can get everywhere lol they are eating with her a bit now and drink from the water bottle!

Angel, American is a breed of rabbit. They do not normally come in black.

Oh, and five weeks should be OK. I have never had a rabbit not naturally on almost exclusively hay and pellets at that age. That is when I pull my biggest kits to start weaning. With no ill effects. I know some people who keep their kits with the moms for 8 weeks and they have shown no difference in how much they eat or grow from an extra three weeks... Wild rabbits wean at 28 days so they can be ready for their next litter to be born at 32! Also mine get veggies from day one. Three litters all under 3 weeks are snacking on carrots in my garage right now without a care or a tummy issue in the world. :p Just feed veggies in smallish quantities and they should be fine. Some good plants to start with are strawberry, balckberry, mulberry or raspberry leaves tops stems or branches. These are all considered "kit safe". Rabbits that dont eat veggies young may have trouble eating them or be very picky later in life. Good luck!
