So the Altex definitely was pregnant
She only had one baby and it was born dead.
This was a couple hours ago and she hasn't had any more since. She's not bleeding or anything, doesn't appear to be in labor, do you think she's done? I've never heard of them just having one baby.

So this morning my rabbit had babies! Last litter on this hobby farm! I got rid of my male a few weeks ago. I don't know how many yet when I went out she was in the process of having them. I will post pictures later
Congrats

I don't see why they wouldn't be able to just have one, but I wouldn't discount more yet as it can take a day or so to birth them all.

@kimmerjo Fingers crossed for a good litter!

@dutchbunny83 Sorry to hear you lost yours.

Single babies are usually huge, and delivering them takes so long they typically don't survive the birthing process. If you want babies from this rabbit, I would wait a day or two, then re-breed her. Rabbits don't do what most people consider a heat cycle, but they do experience hormonal peaks and valleys. One of the highest peaks a doe will ever experience happens right after she kindles. A doe that is bred soon after kindling typically releases the most eggs she can at one time, so she winds up with as large a litter as she can produce. As does age, their productivity drops. An older (3+years) doe is often nearly infertile; one or two may be all she produces normally. Rebreeding her after a lost kindling may result in a litter that can survive - 4, maybe more.

Okay thanks
I wasn't trying to breed her, I actually took their word for it when we brought her in that she was a he haha, guess I should have double checked!
She's an altex and huge, but this baby was very small and gray. I have a gray lionhead in with the males so my guess would be he was the father not the NZW.
I still have her in the cage in case there were more, but she doesn't seem like, she's just hopping around and eating.
I don't know her history so no idea how old she is or if she's ever been bred before.

oddly good timing for my question it looks like. i have a doe who just had babies and both died within a few hours (first time mom, it happens) and now i want to make sure i'm doing what i should for her. she has finally quit building the nest she didn't start until after both babies were dead, and i am planning on breeding her on friday (the babies were born on monday). do i need to worry about her producing milk without having any babies? is there anything else i should be doing for her right now?

thanks.

Sooo my Altex doe that I thought was a boy that had the 1 random dead bunny yesterday morning--

She gave birth to 6 healthy kits around dinner time last night.
4 of them are white with black spots and 2 are black or dark gray.
In my male pen she was in I have a New Zealand white and a Gray Lionhead.
I know the Altex is a mix of NZW, California, & Flemish Giant so not sure how I got spotted ones, I don't know much on rabbit genetics.
But all the bunnies seem to be doing well, so is Mama
