Quick breeding question, and I know this isn't a completely straightforward answer, about colors. Our mini rex buck is broken black, we have two does, a black and a tort. We are going to try some breeding with them this fall. I know the black/broken black should give us mostly broken black (right?). Would the tort/broken black give mostly broken tort? I would really rather breed her with a nice tort buck, but good quality reds are hard to come by. Our broken black is a very nice show quality rex from good lines, our does aren't as great (in a show sense) but the red is the one that is closer to type and has shown better in the past. What would be a better match up for her if a nice tort can't be found? I love the tort color, and would like to preserve the red in the line. Any thoughts? I need to learn more about the genetics/crosses before we breed. Thanks!

I bred my 2 castors together and got some nice reds. :) with no red in their lines, so its kinda a fun guessing game with kit colors. :) bred my 2 otters together and got blue fox!!! (blue tort with otter markings) so you can get colors f the rainbow in one litter sometimes. :) all about what they carry, and what is hidden back in their genes

They do have pedigrees, so I can do some research on their background colors. I thought the red torts were okay for shows? I knew the blues weren't, we have showed her successfully at 4H/fair level, but haven't gone ARBA yet. Here is her pic, although this is several months ago so she is more filled in now. She is now about 7 mths old I think. Her sires were a tort and a blue and fawn broken tort.

And here is our buck, he has a broken tort and a cinnamon in his grand sires, but the parents were a black and a broken black.

Our black doe actually has quite a bit of red in her pedigree, her grand sires were a red/castor, and a tort/broken fawn tort, her sires were a castor/black. So we will probably get a mixed bag when we breed! This pic is only a month old, but hard to see her b/c of the hutch. I really need updated pics of my bunnies!

@abserbean

Black and Tort are Self colors, and since the gene that causes the Self pattern is most recessive in its series, the only possible results from Self-to-Self breeding is more Selfs. In other words, you can't get any Agouti colors (like Castor) or Tan colors (like Otter) from them.
Quote: I'm having a little trouble deciphering this; "sire" is the word for the male parent, "dam" is the word for the female parent. If you are saying that her pedigree states that her dam was a black, and that her (black) dam cam from a cross between a tort and a broken blue tort, well, that's impossible.

But going on what you have, a tort and a black doe, breeding to a broken black buck with tort in his background, the possibilities are pretty straightforward. The likeliest outcomes are tort and black, and the broken versions of them. You might get blues or blue torts, if there is some blue lurking in the buck's background.

Also remember, you can not get castor from their breeding no matter how much is I background, because one parent must be agouti to get agouti. :)
