Anyone ever let their rabbits run free in the yard? I live out in farm country and I've driven by two houses on my road who have their rabbits (they look like mini rexes) out in the mornings. We have three holland lops and when they were just 8wks old we tried letting them roam in the yard but they took off so fast, my kids cried in fear we'd never get them back, especially if they took off into the woods, that we never let them roam around free again unless they were in a large pen in the yard. If we tried again this spring, do you think now they were older they'd be a little more laid back and not take off??

I wouldn't be as worried about them taking off as I would be worried that they would get eaten, attacked, or hurt themselves.

I would keep them enclosed... They could easily run away, but there is a greater chance of them being eaten. Better safe than sorry.

My Goliath does. He's been out & about since the beginning of summer. I put his food in the fowl yard & about 1/3 of the week he will spend his nights in the pen - other wise he hangs around the rabbit hutches & has been doing great! He is colored perfect for roaming. It's not for everyone, or every rabbit. Our set up is the rabbit hutches near the garage - there is a flood light that is motion sensored that's aimed @ the drive & one aimed @ the fowl yard. If I feel uneasy about a night or anything, I'll coax him into the fowl yard.

Any tips on picking a good rabbit? Questions to ask the breeder?
I've been studying my Standard of Perfection on Mini Rex and have been doing some research online.
I'm looking at one that has markings like this:

They look like a Rhinelander's markings, with the spine marking and spotting on the side.
Is this good or bad? Are brokens supposed to have more of a blanket pattern? I know they need more than 10% coloring.

That's a nice pattern. Ask the.breeders if they have been.shown yet, how did they do, and if they've been bred.

Make sure the breeder has a Pedigree. Take a look at their other animals and see the condition of them to see if yours is healthy. That one has nice markings. If it has a butterfly, make sure it's full. Make sure your breeder is reliable too. It might help to get a friend or judge who knows about MRs to look at the rabbit before you buy it. Are buying from a 4-H or ARBA show? I never buy from 4-H shows...

It is an ARBA show. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone who breeds Mini Rex, or who would know what to look for.
