This is possibly what happened to your rabbit. This possum ate about 9 of my beautiful chickens last fall. I finished him off with my 4-10! He was huge!
I'm leaning towards something coming to attack it. Like I said, I've never seen anything like this and if the rabbit did die it would have taken weeks or months for it to get to that condition I found it in. Just makes me wonder why the other female in the cage was left untouched. Weird....

I thought I'd show off some of my bunnies. The first one is Melody, my Black Otter Jersey Wooly Doe. The second one is my tiny Black Otter Netherland Dwarf stud muffin, Howie, and the third one is my sweetheart Jersey Wooly Doe Nicollette!

So cute!!! I love that first one! I had a jersey wooley when I was younger. Loved that breed.

Lynzi, I'm sorry to hear about your son's bun. It's not uncommon to lose one unexpectedly, but to lose one like that is so shocking.

You know your son best, of course, but I have never lied to my kids about animal deaths - especially with rabbits. For years, I've had a bit of a bitter joke about them. When someone asks me what the life expectancy of a rabbit is, I usually say, "until they get tired of it." I've kept rabbits for upward of 25 years, and over the years, I've had a lot of unexplained and unexpected deaths. I would spare your son the gory details, but I think it a bit unkind to string him along, letting him think there is a chance of his rabbit coming back, when you know that it never will.

Rabbits can be astonishingly brutal to each other, causing horrendous injuries, but if there was flesh missing, that to me says "predator." It might have been a possum, or maybe a weasel. Dogs can do horrific things without even getting a rabbit out of its cage. What is even worse than what you experienced, is having an animal live through such an attack, and you then have to put it out of its misery.

I currently only have one rabbit. He's a Flemish Giant cross. He's currently weighing in at 20 pounds! In the summer he usually weighs 18 pounds but because of all the cold weather we've been having lately he hasn't been able to run around in his outdoor pen. As for temperament, he's a pretty moody boy which is something that I don't really enjoy at times. One moment he'll be all happy go-lucky, scratch me, hold me, hug me! Then the next moment he'll be the Spawn of Satan, hitting everyone with his front paws who comes near him and if you're close enough, he'll chomp right down on you. Ouch! He's left some nasty bruises on people unfortunately. I still love my big guy though. He's a great bunny and thankfully I'm his favorite person in the household(; This picture was taken the day I got him. He was only 3 months old here and was already bigger bigger then my full grown Mini Lop. Don't mind the markings in his ear, they were from the breeder.

In the past I've owned a Mini Lop. He ended up being one of my favorite pets that I've ever owned. He was such a sweet boy, he acted just like a little puppy. He was my shadow. I remember when he used to wake me up in the morning. He would come up to my bedroom as soon as my dad let him out of his pen and he'd lick my nose until I woke up. He was such a good boy, I don't think I'll ever have another bunny as sweet as he was. The funny thing was that he was just a little pet shop bunny, he didn't come from a fancy breeder like my other two did yet he ended up having the best personality.

I also owned a little Mini Rex when I was younger. Her name was Black Beauty. She was a very friendly girl but she was on the shy end. She liked hanging out with the Guinea Pigs rather than socializing with people. Oh well, she was a nice girl. Sadly I don't have any pictures of her on my computer :(

Hello everyone! I am new to this thread, but not new to BYC!!

We are getting our first rabbit today. I do not know what type it is, but have narrowed it down to either a checkered giant, english spot, or mini rex.

I have a picture of it but cannot tell the size/weight from the picture.

yep i know the effects of dog attacks! it has happened so many times

The only thing I can think of getting in there would be maybe a possum. We don't have dogs running around here, we live out in the sticks so the only dog is our own and he's more of a cat than a dog LOL someone mentioned it was probably the other bunny, but I just don't believe that. She had not one ounce of blood or any red stains on her or around her mouth. I was out there just the day before and then again the next morning and that's when I found her the way I did.

I told my son today, he didn't seem too upset. I told him that the bun looked sick the day before when I had gone out there to feed them and refill water. Like she hadn't been eating and the next morning she I found her just laying there so she hasn't made it they the night. If I told him the truth he would have wondered why nothing happened to my daughter's bunny who was in the cage also.

We're going to breed the male and female we have in the spring and I told him if he still wants a bunny to call his own we can keep one of the babies.
