Anyone here heard about the "snuffles vaccine" if so, what are your thoughts on it?
I just had to cull 5 of my rabbits do to pasteurella like symptoms. I'm seriously considering getting it as I don't want to ever deal with it, or worry about it, again.
I know there are some cons to the vaccine. Some people are saying that by vaccinating our rabbits against this illness, we are creating rabbits with weak immune systems since we won't be culling infected rabbits anymore. I think, that if your breeding for this strong immune system, why do you quarantine your sick rabbits? Shouldn't you keep sick rabbits with your herd to see which ones become ill so you can cull them? Also, rabbit breeders have been culling sick rabbits for about a century now and we still can't get our herds to the point of immunity.
There's a lot of breeders who are for the vaccine and a lot who are against. I'm doing my best to do my research on the vaccine and find out what's right for my herd.

i know nothing about a vaccine, but if it is bacterial vaccines and inherited immunity are a lot more difficult than viral. most diseases that we have vaccines for for people are viruses, and viruses are the ones that if you get once, you might not get again. the odds of being immune to bacteria is a lot lower. there are some, at least supposedly, but not many.

fortunately, antibiotics (for bacterial infections) are a lot safer than antivirals, which really are just poisons and can cause just as much damage as the virus sometimes.

How old do the bunnies need to be before they are ready for breeding? Or even better... When is safe? I know with dogs you should wait until the female has gone through at least 1 if not 2 cycles... And males should he over a year... But bunnies??? No clue.

Depends on the breed of rabbit you have. What breed are yours?

I was told 4 months for small breeds, 6 months for medium breeds and 8 months for large breeds.

I would never breed a small breed rabbit until 6 months of age.
x2 I couldn't imagine breeding a small breed at only 4 months of age. If anything at all, I would think it was the other way around - the larger breeds you can breed earlier because they are obviously larger at that point in time. But even still I don't know that I would breed any rabbit under 6 months of age.

I'm not familiar with large breeds tho, I've never had anything larger than a mini rex or holland lop.

My babies will be 4wks old tomorrow. They are sooo cute I don't know how I will ever part with them. Especially the chestnut. LOVE him to pieces but I really don't need another buck. the only females in this litter are a Harlie and the Frosty - which I'm keeping and my friend is taking the Harlie.
