I think many of those crammed into small cages are sold by resellers, who buy animals at auction cheap and then resell them at flea markets for a profit.Most of those guys do not worry much about the welfare of the animals, other than getting their money back. But at least most of the ones you see at auction do not live there permanently, unlike the commercial laying hens. I try to give my animals as much space as possible, and still fit all of them in my truck if I am selling them at auction.
I got a great deal today on Craigslist, bought three triplex bunny cages with water bottles, feeders, and some nest boxes for $60! What a steal! You can't even buy the wire for that much. So now I will have space for the bunnies I have been growing out. Plus I will save time not having to build them. Just wash, spray paint , and put into use.
