Made a play yard for the bunnies this morning. I'm sitting outside supervising and reading the paper. I fenced off the area where I grow grasses for the chickens and bunnies. They made a tunnel and are running in and out and all around, kicking up their hind feet and twirling in the air. Great bunny watching.

This is the area. If you look hard you can see Lela the white bunny coming out the end of the grass.

Here is GinGin in the grass.
Ver Nice also ( Im dating my self ) is Gin-gin named after the dog on I dream of jeannie??

New bunnies on the way! :D Also someone dropped off a stray at my house this week. So say hello to the 12lb giant-mix mutt, Lucy! We'll just have to see how she fits in with the rabbitry.

Lucy is adorable! I love mutts

I used to have a giant mutt who followed me around the yard. I'll have to see if I can pull up any photos of her..

She is VERY cute, and pretty sweet as well, so I am hoping she fits in with my rabbitry program. It's going to take time to find out. Any guesses on what she might be crossed with, given she's a broken tortiseshell?
I almost never take in rescues because I raise meat rabbits and people are like "this is my pet bunny, I want her to live forevers!" and we don't do that here. We do meat pens and sell 4H rabbits and meat production breeders... All our rabbits have an eventual end in our freezer.
But the former owner goes to church with my mom and grew up on a farm. She said she'd rather see Lucy go to someone who would take good care of her and make her happy and then eat her than to see her stuck in tiny shelter cages and end up with who knows who that may not even remember to clean up after her. And I can totally relate. So now I have a rescue mutt, but she's sweet and pretty so I hope she can stick around.

Lucy's color is frequently called Tricolor, which is a combination of the broken pattern and the Harlequin pattern (tortoiseshell in rabbits is very different from tortoiseshell in cats). The Harlequin breed only shows in Harlequin and Magpie (which is a combination of harlequin and chinchilla). The Rhinelander only shows as a broken Harlequin. Rhinelanders are a bit smaller than Lucy, with a full-arched type similar to that of the English Spot. A few other breeds (Rex, some Lops) may come in tricolor as well.

If I were to try to produce a rabbit of approximately her color and size, I might try crossing a broken Red New Zealand with a Rhinelander, but that's just one guess.

Ok, I need help, My rabbit is now almost a year, 5-6 lbs, and has completely changed shape, she is definitely a satin! She is also a complete pi-polar, hormonal, and aggressive female. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

I looked up rhinelanders and I am convinced that she is at least part Rhinelander. She has a bit of a stripe down her back just like they do, butterfly on her face, a few spots on the sides. But she is 12.5lbs which is a little big even for a NZW. My NZW's are only in the 9.5-10.5lb range. And she very much has the head shape, dewlaps and thick body reminiscent of a Giant breed.

There is a little problem with Lucy being a simple Rhinelander/Flemish cross, which has to do with the nature of the broken gene. The broken gene sets the pattern, but there are many little modifier genes that refine the way it looks. Most of the time, breeding a broken to a rabbit of a type or just a bloodline that doesn't have broken in the background means that you don't get the modifiers, and you wind up with "booted" brokens that only have white feet, and maybe a small white spot on the face. Since Flemish don't come in broken, I wouldn't expect that much white on a rabbit with a pure Flemish parent.

Another problem is the harlequin gene. It occurs in the E series, where it is recessive to the normal full-color gene and dominant to the non-extension gene. I know, that can sound like Greek to someone who isn't well versed in rabbit genetics, but what I'm driving at is that the only non-extension Flemish color is Fawn. If the Flemish was either Fawn, or carried Fawn, you could get harlequin babies, but all of the other colors would hide the harlie in the first generation.

Interesting cross, to be sure!

Oh I'm sure she's got more in her than a Giant and Rhinelander. it just so happens that her patterns are dang close to the Rhinelanders.

Here's another shot where you can see some of the spots down her back. I was just marveling the other day how she got such a nice even stripe of spots right down her spine like that when I went and looked at the Rhinelanders.
But both NZW's and Rhinelanders are too small for her. Maybe she should just be my Giant Rhinelander. XD It'd make an interesting breed. Nobody has any idea what she is otherwise.

I'm very worried about my Mini Lop buck. He has suddenly gotten very very skinny & doesn't seem interested in his pellets or hay. He did eat 2 apple slices a couple of days ago & today he ate a small baby carrot & a small piece of broccoli.
I don't know what to do! I'm afraid he's going to die soon. He has been shedding out for like 2 weeks now.....
