What shape of roosts do you use in your chicken coop?

My guess would be they like the rafters because of how high they are. They told me they didn’t like 2x4 on edge

I’ve seen that posting some time ago.
I also have my own observations using different size options. I’ll stick with wide side up or large round branches 4”+ in dia.

I use branches from a big tree lem that fell down. I just cut them to leangth.

I ran across the awesome thread of the test that was meticulously done a couple years back but, didn't get finished. I added my month plus experience testing with our flock... I added to that thread with my experience as well. I have pictures posted in the coop build thread as well to show what we did.

We use halved 2x4's for the roosting bars in the hen house and stumps in the run. The 2x4's have the edges rounded a bit and they seem to love it.

After lots of reading, in midatlantic region, can get cold here we went with 2x4s large flat side up. The 2x3 at the big box stores were too splintery. and the larger size of the 2x4s will also work with our couple of turkeys.

I'm familiar with that article too but the only problem with adding things to the outside of the perches is if you have an outbreak of mites it gives them lots of cracks and crevices to hide in and avoid the treatment that will kill them.
