What Size Block for Tennessee Waltz Quilt? **Completed!**

Kathy, I think it's an awesome two-block combination. I'm excited about making something with a curved look to it, but without curved pieces. Love that!

I am debating the star point color. I don't want the star itself to fade into the background like I've seen on some of these. The first one of this pattern I saw in my Scrap Quilts book has black star points and a 4 patch in the center of the star. I am thinking I'd rather the stars points be a beautiful gold color, but then what to do with the "connecting" wings? Green is my favorite color so want to work that in somehow. Will think on it and keep searching the web for examples to inspire me. All suggestions appreciated! Even when I don't take them, they get me to thinking in new directions.

Found this one, the first I've seen with gold star points, but the rest of it is so gold, and that's not what I want. It looks sophisticated to me, in a way. Love the leaf border!

If Im understanding what your saying (and Im probably not), if the stars are gold, you can make the connecting arms a combination of dark greens. Gold and green is beautiful together.

Its hard to believe that a quilt that intricate is only 2 block patterns, but I see them now. Quilting is just so cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kathy, you could do it! I can't sew a lick--never ask me to make clothing or you'd be sorry, LOL. Quilting, however, is art to me, just fiber art. I'm not at all artistic in any other way (and maybe some would say I'm not artistic at all).

I'm not sure what shade of green. Don't really want it like a hunter green, maybe a sage? Argh! I can't decide! It will come to me by the time I'm ready to do it, though, I'm sure.

Cynthia, I made that quilt years ago in afghan size. It was a 9" block from Judy Martin's "Scrap Quilts". I made several of her designs over the years and auctioned them for our son's school. He's 34 now; so over 20 years ago, that quilt sold for $125! Whoa! The smaller size is great for wall hangings or
couch-potato snuggling. I wasn't experienced enough then to graph another size, but the 9" worked great. I also used the colors the author chose, which were Autumn colors. And .... years ago, everything I did was handquilted. I'm just getting lazy in my old age!

That last picture you found looks almost like stained glass - you notice the sides of the 54-40 or Fight is the same color as the Snowball. It really makes the star pop.

I noticed that! I do like that one--it's completely different than any others I've found on the web. If I could incorporate some lighter greens in there, that might make something a bit less intensely gold, but still have that glittery/glassy look to it.

The Judy Martin book is the one I have, one of the first quilting books I ever bought. Everything I do is hand quilted, but now, I machine piece. Goes soooo much faster that way.

I had ordered the flannel for some baby projects and couldn't find bigger pieces to send you from my stash. It is lovely flannel. I also have ordered more adult flannels from them

I drafted a pattern for the Bird of Paradise block in a 12 inch size. Since it is basically the Tennessee Waltz pattern would you like me to send it to you? That would give you both the 9 inch and the 12 inch.

Kathryn, thanks so much! Sure, if it's no trouble. You're a peach! Gosh, what can I send you?

Oh, check this out on quilterscache and you may not need to send that: http://www.quilterscache.com/F/FiftyFourFortyorFightBlock.html

They
call it 54-40 and then they proceed to show the TN Waltz and don't mention the Snowball block they used in their example, LOL. That is a 12" block they are showing. Do you use this site at all?

I didn't know it was called Bird of Paradise with the 4 patch in the center of the star since the Judy Martin book I have just listed it as the 54-40 or Fight!, even with the 4 patch. It's so interesting how a block with a slight variation is a different name, and sometimes, there are just several names for the exact same pattern.
